Move over Great Barrier Reef, there’s a mushroom on the loose. A fungus has been discovered in the Malheur National Forest in Oregon, USA and is said to be the new largest living organism. Also known as the Honey Mushroom, small toadstools are visible above ground but are only the tip of the fungal iceberg. The main organism lives a metre underground and is estimated to cover an area of 1665 football fields. Scientists decided to investigate when trees in the forest began to die. After testing samples from various locations, they realised it was one giant organism. The mushroom uses tentacles, called rhizomorphs, to steal water and nutrients from the roots, killing all trees in its path.
